The series that gave the forgotten plumber brother his much-needed screen time, Luigi's Mansion has been spooking fans since 2001. Giving fans a chance to get to know the unappreciated backup Mario's been using for 37 years, it throws the nervous nelly into his worst nightmare, giving him a chance to become the hero for a change.

While he spends most of his time anxiously wondering what might be around the corner, that doesn't mean he can't have some laughs along the way. In fact, a lot of the game is filled with some of the funniest moments in the franchise, with Luigi usually being the butt of the joke. Either way, fans have fallen in love with the reluctant saviour, showing players that bravery doesn't always look so easy.

10 The Aloof Professor

E.gadd introduction conversation

In all 3 of the Luigi's Mansion titles, E.Gadd is a wealth of funny moments, his callous attitude is in perfect contrast to Luigi's over the top panic in most situations. Acting as the emotional anchor to the series, Luigi's Mansion 3 is no different.

After saving the mad scientist who's been trapped in a painting, Luigi then explains that he has to stay to save the rest of his friends. This is met with disdain from the professor, annoyed that he's even considering the idea of spending another moment in the Last Resort.

9 Power Nap

While this wasn't the most harrowing of situations, very few can be when Polterpup is involved, the unexpected collapse of Luigi is gold. Even surprising the pup, players are expecting to journal with the anxious plumber when he instantly slips into the dream world.

It's also one of the rare surprise moments that doesn't make fans jump out of their skin, taking a break from the constant anxiety of roaming through the jump scare heavy setting. Luckily, Polterpup just follows Luigi's lead and drifts off beside him.

8 The Environment Attacks

Throughout the entire game, players will have to contend with the general environment. While it creates tension in some moments, as soon as the jump scare happens the release is one of the best moments, mostly because of Luigi's exaggerated reactions.

From ghostly apparitions to haunted decorations, Luigi is constantly getting his heartrate raised through the roof. While the older Nintendo fans might not fall for some of the less subtle tricks, Luigi's reaction is guaranteed to get a giggle.

7 All For Nothing

The coveted elevator buttons that are so hard to find get even more elusive, being stolen by mice that keep the glowing button in their stomach. The worst part is Luigi has to defeat the ghost boss, Chef Soulfflé, for that button and the look of disappointment as it's swallowed is priceless.

It takes away from the sting of prolonging the mission, the audacity to ruin his celebration with such a mundane task is comical. One of those situations where it's either laughter or crying, it's time to get the Poltergust G-OO out and do some exterminating.

6 Polterpup

A challenge to anyone to say there's a more silly, loveable character than Polterpup, constantly breaking the suspense with his cheerful nature. It's the perfect remedy to battling ghosts, especially when it's so unaffected by most of the scary situations, often helping out.

He's with Luigi when he at the beginning of the game and sets a somewhat misleading mood, introducing players to Last Resort by a series of whimsical lobby animations. Anytime the enemy ghosts get a little too much, pat Polterpup and see how quickly the stress falls away.

5 Toad Projectile

Saving Toad not only gets the player a step closer to saving the cast of friends, but he also receives a new mechanic to get the task completed. Using Toad with the Poltergust, the overly excited companion becomes a projectile Luigi can use in sticky situations.

It also gives Luigi an opportunity to catch a break from the frenetic personality, doing little to calm him down. It's also one of the funniest visuals available in the game as Toad's mushroom head gets stuck, only to be launched across the level making those signature noises.

4 Garage Antics

Luigi's first introduction to the Garage level of Dark Room is cheerful, at least for the player, Luigi can't seem to let his hair down in these situations. He peers in and sees one of the Greenies honking the horn and having a jolly old time, all before his companion comes in and steals the Strobulb in the car.

This will trigger the first mission and continue the playful tone of the Greenies around the entire residence. It's hard not to be amused every time they come around, they do anything but take it seriously and seem to be having some of the best times in the game.

3 An Awkward Entrance

Luigi walks in on ghost

On the path to the first ghost battle in Dark Moon, Luigi enters the bathroom and swiftly receives a call from E.Gadd. Sitting on the toilet will send players inverted into a whole other bathroom, pulling back the curtains will reveal a Greenie in the middle of taking a shower.

Needless to say, it leaves immediately and travels into another room, follow the ghoul and meet the first enemy. It's not only the Greenie's embarrassment at the situation but inevitably Luigi's. The most ill-equipped character to be in an awkward situation, Luigi has to be mortified.

2 Surprise Launch

Luigi about to blast off

Ladders aren't a new thing in Luigi's universe, with most of them functioning normally and requiring some effort to get up. On the path up to the boss fight at the Clock Tower Gate, Luigi will walk up to a ladder and be launched into the air in a split second.

He's launched so far it has to go to a cutscene and will arrive at the top dishevelled and confused. What makes it so great is the lack of hints that anything is off, surprising both character and player.

1 Gooigi's Nerve

Throughout the series, players have come to expect a certain level of jitteriness from the protagonist. This means it's expected that his gooey clone will have the same disposition, jumping at every speedy ghoul.

However, fans were surprised to find his dead face reaction to a spectre trying to scare him, giving no reaction at all. Finally stepping up to the ghosts and making them look the fool for once, this spirit's reaction will make any fan of the series crack a grin.
